Watch the Ground Break!

Nourishment, strength, belonging—that’s what comes to mind when we think of the element earth. To the students at The KRUNK Movement, it is all this and more. According to them, “earth” signifies steadiness, a foundation to root oneself, and the capacity, necessity, and prerogative of growth.

Today, we live in a time that needs us to recognize the importance of this resource. We must understand how vital it is and take better care of this earth. KRUNK’s new song, Earthquake, brings this urgency to light.

Like Tohoku in 2011, Haiti in 2010, etc., earthquakes have stood for death and disaster. The KRUNK artists redefine the meaning of this word. It shifts from a herald of destruction into a proclamation of creation. The song begins with the question “Will this earthquake be the end of us?”—referencing current global issues such as deforestation, fires in Brazil, declining economy, climate change, and more. Then—as young people are doing all over the world—they take on the responsibility themselves. The music is their movement. Its message is that this status quo is unacceptable and it’s the incredibly talented, confident, and capable youth that are here to shake things up.

Regardless of where we are in the world, we must all strive to care for the planet we live on and the gifts it gives us. Or, as it is often put, “this land is your land, this land is my land.” And it’s time we do something for it. The KRUNK Movement is using art to lead that change—they’re groundbreaking; it’s an earthquake!
